In the early 60s, Bill Fury was Britain's most popular rockstar and considered to be England's version of Elvis
and James Dean combined. The second photo (on right) shows John asking for Bill's autograph.

The Beatles played Hamburg's Star-Club multiple times in 1961.

In 1961 the Beatles played back-up on Tony Sheridan's album. Several of their early recordings came from that
recording sesion: 'My Bonnie' and their instrumental song 'Cry for a Shadow'.

Ringo
With Rory Storm and the Hurricanes

The largely forgotten story of Rory Storm played an important part in the Beatles development. Being born in 1939 as Alan Caldwell
he was a year older than John and four years older than George and had reached a level of local fame that motivated the early
Beatles. All of the Beatles members, including Ringo, had been friends of Rory's since 1958. In 1959 Ringo became the
drummer in a band called the Raving Texans and backed Rory's 'Golden Boy' singing performances. They formed the band 'Rory
Storm and the Hurricanes' and Ringo (also the same age as Rory) played a starring role in the group from 1959-1962. The band
members wore colorful or fluorescent suits while Rory dressed in his own flamboyant style and fashioned his hair wildly - while
being known as the King of Liverpool. In 1960, the Hurricanes played the clubs of Hamburg along with the Beatles, though publicized
higher on the club billings. Over the following two years the Beatles' popularity grew rapidly and they became billed as headliners
over Rory Storm. In 1962, Ringo left the Hurricanes and became the new drummer for the Beatles. The rest of the story is now history.

Rory Storm remained a local Liverpool star for awhile, but was passed over by record producers during their rush to sign up new
Mersey Beat bands. Rory died on October 1972 (along with his mother) from sleeping pills. In the 1975 movie 'That'll Be the Day'
...a story which re-created the early days of the the Hurricanes...the main character (Stormy Tempest) was based on Rory Storm.
Bill Fury played the role of Rory in the movie. You can see an early film clip of Rory on the 3rd video-rarities screen.

Rory, with the Beatles at the Cavern Club.

The Beatles with their new 1962 look. After 5 years of wearing the fifties' styles of greased-back hair and leather jackets
the Beatles took a bold fashion move by wearing the more stylish look of the early sixties. The wet-look of the 1950s'
'greaser - juvenile delinquent - Elvis' styles was replaced by the 'dry-look', Continental hair styles growing popular in Europe.
Notice, though, that Pete Best still kept his 1950s' pompadour - while the others had changed styles and the die was cast.

Ringo replaced Pete Best, on drums in 1962, changed his hairstyle to match the others - and the true Beatles were born.
At that time, the 'Beatles look' was actually quite revolutionary (though slighty based on the John F. Kennedy hairstyle as well
as the loose hairstyles of the late 1950s American surfers).

When the Beatles arrived in America, in 1964, just two months after the assasination of America's President - it was their
new style music, fashions and hairstyles that uplifted an entire generation of mourning young people who were more than ready
for something new to fascinate them. When the Beatles' song 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' hit the American radio airwaves, just a
month before their arrival in the U.S., the new, happy sound instantly galvanized young Americans. The impact was phenomenal.
To fully understand the Beatles'impact on American (and world) culture, a person needs to consider the historical time they arrived.
The Beatles album 'Please, Please Me' was released on November 22, 1963 - the exact same day that JFK died. When the Beatles
came to America, fully developed and something completely new and totally up-beat, it was a 'God-Send' to the youth of this country.

topped the charts in England for over seven months. It was later released in the United States (on January 20th - two weeks before

WITH THE BEATLES

November 22, 1963

The second Beatles' album 'With the Beatles' was released in the UK on November 22, 1963. Ironically that was the same day
that President Kennedy was assasinated. The death of JFK was a time of shock and mourning for the teenagers of the time.
The arrival of the Beatles on American television, just 43 days after the President's funeral, provided young people in
the USA with a much needed new, fresh outlook and spirit of happiness. The Beatles filled a tremendous void and
brought a feeling to hopefullness to America's teenagers.

The songs on the Beatles' Btitish albums were released on American albums in a non-chronological order on the following
American Beatles' Capitol Records albums: 'The Beatles 2nd Album' - April 1964, 'Something New' - July 1964,
'Early Beatles' - March 1965, and Beatles VI - July 1965.

It Won't Be Long
All I've Got To Do
All My Loving
Don't Bother Me
Little Child
Till There Was You
Please Mr. Postman
Roll Over Beethoven
Hold Me Tight
You Really Got A Hold On Me

A HARD DAYS NIGHT

July 10, 1964

This was the first Beatles' album with every song written by John and Paul. Ten of the songs were written by John and three by Paul.
The American version of this album only included 8 of the songs and the other songs were released later on the US albums listed above.

If I Fell
I'm Happy Just To Dance With You
And I Love Her

Any Time At All
I'll Cry Instead
Things We Said Today
When I Get Home
You Can't Do That
I'll Be Back

BEATLES FOR SALE

December 4, 1964

This was the Beatles' album that presented an entirely different style of lyrics than thier previous songs. Tired of music critics
saying their albums were mainly filled with 'happy love songs', The Beatles sought to create a darker version of love songs
'No Reply', I'm a Loser', Baby's in Black', etc.). They also included songs written by Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Carl
Perkins and Leiber & Stoller. The American version of this album was titled 'Beatles' 65'.

No Reply
I'm A Loser
Baby's In Black
Rock And Roll Music
I'll Follow The Sun
Mr. Moonlight
Kansas City
Eight Days A Week
Words Of Love
Honey Don't
Every Little Thing
I Don't Want To Spoil The Party
What You're Doing
Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby

HELP!

August 6, 1965

This album was composed of songs from the Beatles' second movie. The American version of this album only had
seven of these songs, though they were released on other singles or albums (like 'Rubber Soul')

Help! The Night Before
You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
I Need You
Another Girl
You're Going To Lose That
Ticket To Ride
Act Naturally
It's Only Love
You Like Me Too Much
Tell Me What You See
I've Just Seen A Face
Yesterday
Dizzy Miss Lizzy

RUBBER SOUL

December 6, 1965

Even though 'Rubber Soul' was released in December 1965 - I've placed it in the next section of the Beatles' 1966-1980 music
videos, mainly because it was released so late in the year (and in the middle of the decade) when a distinctly marked departure
began from the Early Beatles sound and the beginning of their new, psychedelic music period. Click the link at the bottom of
this page for 'Rubber Soul' and all the rest of the Beatles' album info and videos.
